NCUT has always attached great importance to scientific research administrative departments are responsible for organization of various scientific research and academic exchange activities. At present, NCUT has a number of research institutes and laboratories, including Beijing Municipality’s key Laboratory of Field Bus and Automation, Computer Application Research Institute, Mechatronic Engineering Research Institute, Automatic Control Research Institute, Economic Law Research Institute, Research Institute of Economics, Research Institute of Management, Research Institute of Legal Theory, Linguistic & Cultural Research Institute, Architectural Design Institute.

In recent years, NCUT has attained remarkable achievements in its research activities: it has undertaken about 40 research projects of the State Natural Sciences Foundations and “863 Projects”; over 200 key research projects at provincial and ministerial levels, and over 600 joint research projects in cooperation with enterprises, among which over 70 projects have passed the technical appraisal at the provincial or ministerial level, over 40 projects have been awarded provincial or ministerial level prizes, and over 60 projects have been given the national patent rights. In addition, it has over 1700 academic papers and 150 monographs or translated works published. NCUT takes the lead in the country in R&D of field bus technology, intelligent control and devices, CAD&CAM, application of fuzzy control technology in the metallurgical industry, high-frequency power supply and other basic research and technical application fields. NCUT is the secretary-General institution of China Electric Vehicle Association, and the name-board hanging unit of China National Cold Bending Forming Association. NCUT ranks among the first higher learning institutions under the Beijing Municipality in amount of research funds granted and number of per capita papers published.
