The North China University of Technology (NCUT) is a multi-disciplinary institution, Which, taking industrial automation and modern management as its main fields of study and Instruction, combines engineering and science with liberal arts in its teaching and research programs. It grew out of the former state-run Beijing Senior Polytechnic High School founded in 1946 and has undergone various changes in its structure ever since. In 1978,under the authorization of the State Council, it became Beijing Metallurgical Institute of Mechanic and Electric Engineering, and, in 1985, it was renamed North China University of Technology.
NCUT is situated at the foot of Beijing’s Western Hills, covering an area of 247,600 square meters with the total floor space of 170,000 square meters, and a sporting space of 38,958 square meters. NCUT is comprised of the following 7 colleges: College of Engineering, College of Economics and Business Administration, College of Architecture, College of Basic Sciences, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Applied Technologies and College of Continuing Education, offering 25 undergraduate programs,8 experimental centers and 5 research institutes, as well as a computer-managed library with a collection of 46,430 books and periodicals, an art gallery, a remote audio and visual education center and a sports center. NCUT has constructed an Intranet, covering the whole campus facilities.
NCUT enrolls its students from all parts of the country for its 29 specialties and has thus developed into a three-level higher education system, including full-time senior occupational, undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as the continuing education programs, with stress on undergraduate programs. At present, the total number of full-time students is 5,839 in addition to 62 graduate students, 11 international students and 2,984 evening and correspondence students. NCUT has full-time teaching and administrative staff of 725,of whom the teachers in charge with high academic titles account for 38.4%, and the faculty under the age of 35 holding Ph.D. and Master’s degrees as well as Master’s records, for 64.7%.
Since the middle of 1980’s, NCUT has seen a steady advance in its research activities. NCUT has been involved in 24 projects of the Funds of National Natural Sciences, Funds of National Social Sciences and National “863” high-tech Projects, and over 80 ministerial-level projects, among which over 100 projects passed the provincial or ministerial-level technical appraisement. More than 70 projects were awarded the national and ministerial-level prizes, and 27 were given the national patent right for their remarkable achievements, thus increasing its research and development grants up to 32,750,000 RMB. Up to the present, NCUT’s faculty has had 1,150 academic papers and over 210 monographs published both at home and abroad. NCUT advocates a close combination of research activities with teaching and the school-run entities’ practice.
NCUT enrolls qualified students from all parts of the country. About 15-20% of the graduates remain and work in Beijing, while the rest of the graduates are employed in all parts of the country: roughly 50% get employment in the nonferrous enterprises and institutions in China,
and a considerable number of graduates are admitted to graduate schools at the key universities. NCUT’s graduates are welcomed by other industries as NCUT has produced versatile or all-round students. NCUT’s graduates mainly work in such first-line services such as production, design, development, marketing operation, and other services as certified engineers, architects, accountants, statisticians, lawyers and the like.
In line with its general requirements to train students in a solid foundation, with a wide range of knowledge, adequate abilities of creation and high qualifications, NCUT places emphasis on quality education and skills training. Thus, NCUT adopts an education system of selecting the excellent students for specially-tailored training programs, and providing them with opportunities to choose their courses in a cross-disciplinary environment so as to develop versatile-type talents who are to meet the needs of society.
